In a somewhat suprising move on Tuesday, head coach Bo Pelini elected not to give out any blackshirts to the defense because he says that “They need to earn them first”. I know some of the traditional fans out there are upset with this, but I like the move and members of the defense actually agree as well.
Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh agrees and says that he wants to show that he has earned the blackshirt and not just have it given to him. It is unclear right now if the jersey will be given out before the second game of the season or at all right now. It will be the first time since 1964 that the defense won’t be sporting the blackshirts in their season opener.
So what is your opinion on the blackshirts? Do you agree that they need to be earned in the first 3-4 games of the season? Leave a comment and let us know your opinion!

A blackshirt is a badge of honor, a symbol of excellence, and a reward for hard work, dedication and accomplishment. The old school in me says hand them out like always, but things are different now after the hell the program has endured, so I say great, lets have the defense earn them and prove they are worthy; then they will be proud to wear them because they know they were not a “gift” The blackshirt tradition will then be restored to symbolize what they were meant to symbolize…excellence.

That is exactly what I think as well. I think once they are given out (I think this happens before the Va Tech game) they will come out fired up and know what it really means to be a blackshirt.
I still think it would be awesome to invite some of the old blackshirt players back to give a big speech before one of the games, or when they jersey’s are handed out.
