The Nebraska Baseball team will open the 2007 season ranked in the top 10 in at least one of the two major polls.
The Huskers are No. 9 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, which was released Friday.
In addition to the team honor, the Huskers placed two players on the Louisville Slugger All-America team. Pitcher Tony Watson is a second-team All-America selection and shortstop Ryan Wehrle is a third-team pick.
Watson, a left-hander from Grimes, Iowa, went 10-2 last season with a 2.78 ERA, striking out 69 and walking 24 in 1001/3 innings. Wehrle, a Papillion-La Vista product, batted .367 with eight home runs, 22 doubles, 48 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 2006.
Stocked with four preseason All-Americans, Rice is Collegiate Baseball’s preseason No. 1. The Owls finished third in the College World Series in 2006, and they return seven position players and six pitchers.
